During World War II, African-American enlistment was at an all-time high, with more than 1 million serving in the armed forces. However, the U. S. military was still heavily segregated and African-Americans soldiers found the same racism as in their civilian lives. Only the Executive Order 9981 from 1948 abolished racial discrimination in the armed forces and eventually led to the end of segregation.
