The term was scalawags. It referred to Southerners who supported the Union plan of Reconstruction and the Republican Party. It first, it was term used to describe farms of low grade quality and was used by South Press to describe their aversion to those who supported the Union. This clearly showed their opposition to the policies of the North after the war.
