Why did earlier historians consider the Medieval Period the "Dark Ages"?

    Citizens were not intelligent and deprived of their rightful education. Because they were not educated, the Monarch could make them believe anything they wanted to. A popular form of this was what Monarch's called their Divine Right. This was where the Monarch "brainwashed" the citizens to believe that God had said that that person should rule.
