    It did not have either the military and economic strength, nor the will to continue to resist the forces spinning the former colonies away from it. Additionally, after so much British blood had been shed in freeing Europe from Hitler's empire, many British people had little stomach or enthusiasm for enslaving or repressing the desire for freedom in others.
