As Chile moved toward their independence in 1810, they became more autonomous (self-governing). They changed their administration, which became comprised of local leaders. Through 1813, they were self-reliant without ties to Lima. Trading restrictions were lessened, they took necessary steps to abolish slavery, and education was promoted. However, Spain started to take steps to regain control over the Chile colony. Those who stayed in Chile were subject to Spain's harsh rule by incompetent representatives, and saw independence was necessary. Chile defeated Spain 1817, and declared independence a year later.
