The Treaty of Versailles ended World War I and forced Germany to accept blame for the war, pay reparations to Allied powers who had fought against German forces, and disarm. Many of the demands made of Germany by Allied powers were criticized by vocal opponents such as Adolph Hitler who campaigned hard (and at times violently) against the Treaty, arguing instead for Germany to remain strong in the face of demands.
