Earlier historians consider the medieval period the "dark ages" because B) the era seemed less important than the Renaissance and the Roman Empire. This is because there were little cultural achievements, written records noting the intellectual movements of the time and limited building activity. This therefore rendered it a very austere period where not much intellectual progress was gained.
