Florida wanted to enter the Union as a slave state. That posed a problem because the government was trying to maintain the balance between slave states and Free states. As a result, they had to wait for six years. When Iowa became a Free State, it once again restored the balance and Florida was finally admitted to the Union as the twenty seventh state.
