Slaves in Athens played a major role in ancient Greek civilization and they are present everywhere. These slaves not only worked as servants but also as factory workers, shopkeepers, mineworkers, farm workers and as ship's crew members. On the other hand, slaves in Sparta were owned by the state and they were treated as animals. They were all essential for food production.
