On the first day of the Battle, Union General John Buford laid out his defense at Cemetery Hill, Cemetery Ridge and Culp’s Hill against Henry Heth’s division. There were a series of engagements between different divisions of both armies. Though the Confederates were gaining during the first day, the Union defenses remained firm as they held the high ground. The second day Lee tried to attack the Union’s left flank and it resulted in fierce fighting several places like Devil’s, The Wheat and other areas where many lost their lives. The attack on Little Round by the Confederates was repelled by Union forces that stood firm against the attacks and were victorious. The Confederates also tried an attack on the right flank but also withdrew due to the reinforcements and heavy fortifications of the Union forces. On the third, Lee sent General Pickett to Cemetery Ridge but his men were cut by Union artillery and gunfire. Later due to the large amount of casualties, Lee withdrew and the Union the battle.
