Why did the Allies invade Europe from the Mediterranean in 1943?

    The Allies invaded the Mediterranean to remove Italy from the Axis powers, which would also stop the Axis influence in the Mediterranean, opening it up to Allied traffic. Also, opening up a second front would lessen the force on the eastern front.
