One major issue was what to do with the blacks. They were no longer slaves (in most states) but no one wanted to hire them either.

In the aftermath of the Civil War, Lincoln became an advocate of the American Colonization Society, a group dedicated to trying to ship all the blacks back to Africa because they didn't want them if they weren't going to be slaves. The ACS is actually responsible for founding the first African nation Liberia. About 30,000 former slaves were shipped to Liberia mainly from Maryland. Today in in Liberia there are restaurants that serve "Maryland Style Fried Chicken".
