Brahmanism, which was a direct predecessor to Hinduism, was based on texts called Vedas. Brahmanism was an ancient sacrificial religion which emerged in India c. 900 BC. Some Hindus still consider Brahmanism to be an important part of their religion, rather than considering it to be completely separate.
