Many Americans withdrew their support. In a very similar incident to that of the Vietnam War, the US was faced with fighting an guerrilla-fighting unit that would be very time consuming. Many Americans were eager to fight after the tragedy of 9/11, but as time went on the cost of the war rose including American and Iraqi casualties. Eventually, many Americans grew tired of the war and Bush's popularity began to drop.
