What was one effect of th fear of mutually assured destruction during the cold war

    The fear of MAD was present with the USA and the Soviet Union. This fear spurred the production of nuclear weapons on both sides in what was called, an "Arms Race". Both powers spent massive amounts of time and money, in a competition to hopefully become the greater threat.
