    That would be Lech Walesa, the influential leader of Poland's Solidarity movement, the first independent trade union within the Soviet Bloc. Walesa feared that the Polish government, then controlled by Soviet sympathizers, would have barred his re-entry. By the time he won the award, the Polish government had already began to implement martial law in an effort to destroy Solidarity, but eventually was forced to meet with the movement's leaders.
