The answer is the fourth one. The maquiladoras ended up noticeably appealing to US firms because of the accessibility of shabby work, downgrades of the peso and positive changes in US traditions laws. In 1985, maquiladoras surpassed tourism as the biggest wellspring of outside trade, and since 1996 they have been the second biggest industry in Mexico behind the oil business.
