    The Sumerian people worshipped many gods. This type of belief is called polytheism. Each city-state, though, claimed one god as its own. To honor this god, the city-state build a large temple called a Ziggurat. A temple is a building used to worship a god or many gods. At first, the priests of the ziggurat ruled the city-states.
