    Greed, basically.

    Seriously, though, the British explored and colonised and took over many countries, basically for raw materials, and goods needed in Britain. So you could say that the economic cause of British imperialism was the industrial revolution. Machines meant things were made faster, finished faster, and more raw materials were needed. We are still on that treadmill.
