Before Jan Matzeliger invented the lasting machine, shoes were manually made by hand. A skilled 'hand luster' can make only 50 pairs in ten hours. With Matzeliger's invention, it can produce 150 to 700 pairs of shoes per day. Because of this, the prices of the shoes were cut into half.
