Citizens during WWll were heavily rationed by the government. There were rations on almost everything imaginable, from rubber and metal to gas and foodstuffs, everything Americans did was to support the troops and the war effort. Americans on the home front used ration books that held ration stamps which they could use to buy groceries and gas. To save the stamps, many people planted victory gardens so they could grow their own food without having to use ration stamps. People were encouraged to carpool to save gas and schools all over America held scrap drives where students would collect as much scrap metal and rubber they could find.
