How did the Virginia Declaration of Rights influence the Declaration of Independence? It was the first document that was openly critical of the king. It was the document Jefferson referred to when writing the Declaration of Independence. It suggested that the colonies should be independent from Britain. It was published as a pamphlet and built support for the Declaration.

    The Virginia Declaration of Rights influenced the Declaration of Independence because it was the document Jefferson referred to when writing the Declaration of Independence. It was his inspiration while he was writing it because it had most of the ideas he wanted to implement in his declaration as well - about the freedoms of the people, and about how the ruler cannot have the utmost reign over a land.
