How did Porfirio Díaz change the direction of government in Mexico?

Up until Porfirio, the country was in a perpetual state of war and revolution, and Porfirio focused on establishing peace, even by suppressing the opposition. He ruled the country with a lot of control over it - he centralized the power in his hands, too.
