I think there was a ritual long ago where virgin women got really intoxicated and tranced out and went into the woods at night naked and Neanderthal humans had there way with them but the women didn't remember and when they got pregnant they assumed the gods had done it as the people believed in the gods. The kids were sometimes very strong, large intelligent hybrid humans that accomplished amazing feats and were thus called heros. Any not - so heroic offspring of this kind or from the probably many wives these heros would have were attributed to dark supernatural forces.
