What happened to the mummy inside the pyramid of the great pyramid?

I habe read that the bodies were taken out in antiquity, not long after burial. Part of the reasoning behind this idea is because no bodies were ever found, but also because the "sarcophagus" found in the Khufu pyramid is almost too small to have held human remains.
