The findings of Galileo frightened the Catholic and Protestant leaders, because his findings went against Church teaching and authority. This was because they saw his astronomical work as being heretic, forced him to recant and spent the rest of his life under house arrest. Galileo Galilei was an Italian astronomer, physicist, engineer, philosopher and mathematician whose work greatly influenced the scientific revolution during the Renaissance.
