What organization worked to improve the situation for blacks in the 1940s?

It was the Black Panthers that worked to improve the social condition of the African-Americans during the 1940's. In addition, the black nationalist movement was the first to promote the welfare and equality of the Black Americans wherein they were inspired by the famous Martin Luther King.
