    Thomas Jefferson, who authored the Declaration of Independence, was greatly influenced by John Locke, who was a major figure of Enlightenment thinking. Jefferson borrowed the idea that "all men are created equal" and that there exists such things as inalienable rights that cannot be infringed upon by any government.
