The disadvantage of the peasant was lack of personal freedom. The feudal often controlled what peasant should do, what work to perform, and which goods to pay. The serfdom often reach absurdity when peasant could not marry without feudal permission, nor could not worship in church that was not affiliate with feudal domain or drink beer that was not brew at the manor. Second problem for peasants was extremely low living standard, where all his or her wealth was confiscated by the feudal. The lack of social mobility and inability to improve their living standard let them extremely spiritually depended on the church and belief in reward in Heaven. Peasant often envied better living standard of the urban folks and tried every possible way to get their children into city to secure them a better life.
