The Patriots was the name of the colonists who favored independence.

They were determined to fight for their freedom. The Patriots were shopkeepers, farmers, artisans and dockworkers. They included the richest and the poorest people in the colonies. They had in their numbers free people and slaves, men and women. They were Protestants, Catholics, and Jews. Most blacks were slaves, still many blacks became Patriots.
