It was built from Nebraska to California and was completed when the crews joined in Utah.

Railroad tracks already existed in the Eastern U. S. before the transcontinental railroad, so the tracks only had to run from Nebraska westward.

Two separate building teams worked on the railroad, and met in Utah, completing the railroad.
