What were the causes of the Mexican war and the effects?!!

I think that back when the boarder line between the U. S and Mexico was up for debate the president at the time sent troops to to patrol what he thought was the boarder and Mexico sent troops then the U. S troops we're ether killed or missing and that was enough to start a war in the end Mexico lost and gave up Texas, California and some other land. That's all I remember
