Why did Kansas become the battleground over slavery?

It bordered Indian Territory.

It was the first time slavery tried to move into free territories.

It bordered the slave states of Missouri and Oklahoma.

There were no slaves living in the territory at the time.

    It bordered the slave states of Missouri and Oklahoma. When Kansas was first holding a vote on wether or not they will allow slavery, people from both slave states and non-slave states came into Kansas to influence the vote.
