The Catholics and the Labor Party were not in favor of it. Their criticism made the Belgian parliament make Leopold give the Congo Free State to Belgium in 1908. It was turned into a Belgian colony called the Belgian Congo (the parliament controlled it). When it became independent from Belgium, it named itself the Republic of the Congo, in Zaire (under a dictatorship). We know it today as the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
