Why did Lincoln decide to change his official stand on slavery?

    The answer is that he never did change his views on slavery. He found it repugnant and an affront to man, but he was never at any time an ardent abolitionist. His election platform in 1860 was that slavery be permitted to continue in those states that then had it. He only wanted to restrict it's spread and called for any new state joining the Union to be free.
