    I would represent his age as "x"

    The equation is:

    3x = 400 - 163.

    = 3x = 237

    Divide by 3.

    3x = 237

    /3 / 3

    x = 237/3

    x = 79 * 3/3

    x = 79.

    So his age is 79.
