A box contains 17 balls numbered 1 through 17. Two balls are drawn in succession without replacement. If the second ball has the number 4 on it, what is the probability that the first ball had a smaller number on it? An even number on it?

    There are 3 balls less than 4 on the first draw.

    Probability = 3/17 = 0.176 or 17.6%

    There are only 3 numbers 0, 1, 2. Only 2 is even.

    Probability = 1/17 = 0.059 or 5.9%
