    a=annie

    b=brian

    a is 5 times of b and 3 means

    a=5 (b+3)

    together travel 30

    a+b=30

    so

    sub 5 (b+3) for a

    5 (b+3) + b=30

    distribute

    5b+15+b=30

    6b+15=30

    minus 15 both sides

    6b=15

    divide boh sides by 6

    b=2.5

    sub back

    a=5 (b+3)

    a=5 (2.5+3)

    a=5 (5.5)

    a=27.5

    annie traveled 27.5 hours

    brian traveled 2.5 hours
