You are ordering a meal and have $15 to spend on. The restaurant charges 6% sales tax and you plan to leave a 15% tip. The equation c = x+0.06x+0.15x gives the total cost c of your meal, where x is the cost before tax and tip. What is the maximum amount you can spend before tax and tip?

    15 < = x + 0.06x + 0.15x

    15 = 1.21x

    15/1.21 = x

    12.40 = x

    check ...

    15 < = 12.40 + 0.06 (12.40) + 0.15 (12.40)

    15 < = 12.40 + 0.74 + 1.86

    15 < = 15 (correct)

    the most u can spend before taxes and tips is $ 12.40
