    In order to solve this equation, you need to find the diameter of the basketball, find the radius of both the rim and the basketball, and then subtract the rim by the ball to find the distance.

    1) Finding diameter of basketball.

    The formula for circumference is C = (3.14) D.

    You know C (which is 30) so you have to solve for D.

    30 = (3.14) D

    /3.14 / 3.14

    9.55 = D

    *Note that the diameter of the circle has been rounded, so has pi*

    2) Finding the two radius.

    The formula for this is D = 2R

    Solve for each.

    Ball:

    D = 2R

    9.55 = 2R

    /2 / 2

    4.775 = R

    *rounded to 4.8*

    Rim:

    D = 2R

    18 = 2R

    /2 / 2

    9 = R

    3) now subtract the rim by the ball to find the distance.

    9 - 4.8 = 4.2

    Therefore, there is 4.2 inches between the ball and the rim.
