A company sells men's basketballs with a circumference of 29.5 in. They also sell youth basketballs with a circumference of 27.75 in. The company has cube-shaped packaging boxes with edges that are either 8 in., 9 in., or 10 in. long. What is the smallest box in which each ball can be packaged?

    Since C=πd, d=C/π

    So the diameter of the large basketballs are:

    d=29.5/π in

    d≈9.39 in

    The diameter of the small basketballs are:

    d=27.75/π in

    d≈8.83 in

    So the large basketballs will have to be packaged in the 10 in boxes and the small basketballs will have to be packaged in the 9 in boxes.
