We combine like terms because they have the same variable. And if they dont have the same variable they do not apply to one another!

Why can we combine like terms?
We can combine like terms because when two terms have the same variable it is possible.
Such as 17x + 3x. The variables are x. Since these both are the same we can now add them. 17x + 3x = 20x. If they are not the same variable. Then we can not add them to get a sum.
