    So xy=-60 and x+y=-28

    x+y=-28 also means x=-28-y

    subsitute x=-28-y for x in xy=-60

    (-28-y) y=-60

    -28y-y^2=-60

    add negative y^2 to both sides

    -28y=-60+y^2

    add 28y to both sides

    0=y^2+28y-60

    factor

    0 = (x-2) (x+30)

    we set them to zero

    x-2=0

    x=2

    x+30=0

    x=-30

    the numbers could be - 30 and 2
