First we find the mean (average)

    (6 + 10 + 14 + 2) / 4 = 32/4 = 8

now subtract the mean value from every data value ... and square it.

    6 - 8 = - 2 ... - 2^2 = 4

    10 - 8 = 2 ... 2^2 = 4

    14 - 8 = 6 ... 6^2 = 36

    2 - 8 = - 6 ... - 6^2 = 36

now find the mean of those numbers

    (4 + 4 + 36 + 36) / 4 = 80/4 = 20 < = = ur variance
