    Amount of Rice (cups) Amount of Water (cups)

    2 5

    3 7.5

    5 12.5

    8 20

    You should take the first variable as the independent varibale, the one whose value you choose. It is the amount of rice, because you decide how much rice you want to cook.

    Once, chosen the amount of rice, you have to use the right amount of water, determined by the ratio, which you can calcualte from the data in the table:

    ratio = number of cups of water / number of cups of rice

    ratio = 5 / 2 = 7.5 / 3 = 12.5 / 5 = 20 / 8 = 2.5

    So, you can tell that these two statements are true:

    The amount of water is the dependent value, and

    The amount of rice is the independent value.
