    1. Make improper fractions with common denominators

    2 1/4 = 9/4=45/20

    3 1/5=16/5=64/20

    2. Add the factions

    45+64=109

    109/20

    3. Divide the numerator by the denominator

    109/20=5.45

    4. Your answer is 5.45 pounds
