The coin container on a bus has 10 more nickels than dimes and together the nickels and dimes are worth $3.50. How many nickels and dimes are in the container?

    (10 + x) $.05 + $.10x = $3.50.

    $.50 + $.05x + $.10x = $3.50.

    $ (.05 +.10) x = $ (3.50 -.50).

    $.15x = $3.00.

    x = $3.00/$.15.

    x = 20 dimes

    So (20 + 10) nickels.
