Are the two expressions equivalent when x=3

8x+40

5 (2X+8)

    8X3=24

    24+40=64

    (distributive property)

    5X2=10

    5X3=15

    5X8=40

    (is now 10X15+40)

    10X15=150

    150+40=190

    So no, they are not equivalent.
