Change 3 1/2 to an improper fraction: 7/2

    Make a common denominator: 21/6, 4/6, 2/6

So he has 21/6 yards of fabric and uses 6/6 total.

    Subtract 6/6 from 21/6: 15/6

    Change 15/6 to a mixed fraction: 2 1/2

He has 2 1/2 yards of fabric left.
