    Subtract 2/3 from 4 and 1/2

first turn 4 and 1/2 into a fraction

    2/2 = 1 so 4 = 8/2 + 1/2 = 9/2

    now you have 9/2-2/3

now find lowest common denominator (2*3 = 6)

    9/2 becomes 27/6

    2/3 becomes 4/6

    now you have 27/6 - 4/6 = 23/6

    6/6 = 1

    6*3=18, 23-18 = 5

so she needs 3 and 5/6 yards of fabric
